Music and VG

Whether you have a disability such as Down’s syndrome, Williams or autism: everyone can make music. The Jostiband shares 55 years of positive experience!

The Jostiband is an orchestra whose members all have a disability. This varies from a light mental handicap (LVB) to serious multiple disabiities (EMB). Sometimes a ‘disability’, such as Down’s syndrome, Williams or ASD, can also provide extra musicality.

Not just playing along for the sake of it

Some members of the Jostiband have a fantastic ear for music. They can play music by ear, even after they heard it only once. Other members of the band play one note at a time, thanks to the colour signs. The third only plays along during the chorus, for example with the tambourine.

Whatever your talent, everyone is important at the Jostiband. The members of the orchestra know that nobody plays along just for the sake of it. It’s only together that you can make really exciting music.

“Of course I sometimes get fed up with playing 2 emmertjes water halen,” says a member of the orchestra with a mild disability. “But then I see the experiencers (people with serious disabilities, ed.) tremendously enjoying themselves, and then you know again why you’re doing it.

The Jostiband for everyone

There is only one Jostiband, but our approach inspires people in the Netherlands and way beyond. The Jostiband uses special Colour Music, so that everyone can practise the songs at home. Or play in an orchestra themselves. On this site we share as many tips and information as possible, so that everyone can enjoy music!

A housemate suggested that I play in the Jostiband. I had my prejudices. What was there for me, with such a bunch of... well, retards. Something like that. That's what I thought. But immediately the first time, when the song 'Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen was played, I came round. That really hit home, it gave me goose bumps.
