4 lessons on colour music

Colour music lesson 1

This is how it works

Nice that you are going to make music! The Jostiband always starts with silence. Nice and quiet. Then listen and sing along. Do you know the song well? Then you are ready to play!

Your instrument

We are going to affix stickers to an instrument. What do you have to pay attention to? How do you make sure that you are completely ready to make music?

Playing songs

See how the Colour Music works. You are learning to play the Dutch children's song Vader Jakob. You can play it on a keyboard. You don't have to read notes. The colours will tell you what to do. Play just like the Jostiband!

Melody and rhythm

What is the melody? When is a note long or short? You will learn this in the last music lesson.

video lesson 4

What will you play?

The Colour Music is made for e.g. a keyboard. You can choose from many more instruments. Difficult to choose? Also read our tips to choose what suits you.

Keys

On a piano or keyboard, you play keys. The Colour Music is very useful here. You play songs with your right hand. The coloured stickers will help you.

Percussion

Some instruments are not about high or low, but about slow or fast. Or hard or soft. You then play the rhythm. For example on the drums or with the macaraca.

Melody

On melody instruments, you play high and low notes in succession. This is called the melody. A keyboard plays the melody, but so does an accordion or a xylophone. What will your instrument be?

Colour music

The Colourful Music was created by the Jostiband. It has existed for more than 50 years! We now have a lot of books in which you can see the colour circles.

Our instruments also have these colour circles. That way we can see exactly what we have to play. In the videos above you can see how it works.

Who is the Colour Music for?
Playing with colours is easier than reading notes. That is great, for example for:

  • people with disabilities
  • children
  • visually impaired
  • people with a brain disorder
  • people who want to learn to play quickly

On your instrument and in your book
Our songs are in books. You can see the colour circles in those books. The normal notes are next to them. That way you can play together with other people. They may prefer to read these notes:

So they are just there. Your colour circles are shown in the book and on your instrument. So you know exactly what to do. Difficult? Watch the videos again! And practise with the four free songs.
